Since Top Gun: Maverick was released, fans have realized that the franchise still had a lot more to say. Now, with director Joseph Kosinski’s latest film F1: The Movie coming out, a lot of people are asking him about the rumored Top Gun 3.
During an interview with GQ, Kosinski was asked to elaborate on his previous comments on the film. Kosinski said that the film was a “big idea” in other interviews for F1 and that’s the most we’ve gotten on it. Outside of star Tom Cruise and Glen Powell hinting that it is underway. Kosinski shared with GQ that they’re just going bigger than Maverick and thinking about the characters in a more interesting way.
“I think we’ve found a way to do it, not only in the scale of what we’re proposing, but the idea itself of the story we’re telling,” he said. “We’re thinking much bigger than… It’s a really existential crisis that Maverick has in this, and it’s much bigger than himself. It actually… I’m trying to describe it without giving anything away. [Laughs.] It’s an existential question that Maverick has to deal with, that would make Maverick feel small, I think, as a movie, compared to what we’re talking about.”
GQ pointed out that Maverick felt like Cruise’s Pete “Maverick” Mitchell was passing the Top Gun Daggers on to a new generation of them, including Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw (Miles Teller). But this movie, so far, still has Maverick as an important figure.
“Yeah, there’s still more story to tell for him. There’s one last ride. So we’re working on it now,” Kosinski said. “Ehren Kruger, who wrote F1, is writing the script. Like all things, it takes a while to work things out, and we’ll only do it if we feel like we’ve got a strong enough story.”
In our own interview with Kosinski for F1, I brought up how certain scenes feel like moments from Top Gun: Maverick. You can see our chat with Kosinski here:
Until we know more about Top Gun: Maverick, at least I know that it is being worked on and that’s enough for me.
