Top Glasgow gastropub Stravaigin opens new event space after rise in demand ahead of COP26

One of Glasgow’s most popular gastropubs has unveiled a new downstairs event space after a surge in demand.

The team behind Stravaigin on Gibson Street in the city's west end has just opened the relaxed private dining area downstairs at the popular eatery.

Owners Colin Clydesdale and Carol Wright, who also own the Ubiquitous Chip and the Hanoi Bike Shop, are excited to see large groups back at their venues.

They believe The Cellar will be the ideal place for guests to celebrate all occasions, and they say they have already been overwhelmed with inquiries for the festive season and ahead of COP26

The new flexible event space and cocktail bar is ready to serve guests again after a significant revamp – which features an eclectic mural taking inspiration from global food culture.

Head Chef James MacRae has created special menus for The Cellar – with options to suit every occasion including a party menu, festive menu, a three-course seasonal menu and a six-course tasting menu.

The venue is also set to welcome live musicians back downstairs, with the return of folk music sessions.

Stravaigin, which was recently named as one of The 50 Best Gastropubs In The UK, is featured in this year’s Michelin Guide.

The award-winning restaurant was known for events pre-Covid, including its popular “Brexit Bunker” during which Glasgwegians came together to say a sad farewell to Europe while enjoying some of the region’s favourite dishes.

Carol Wright said: “This has been a passion project for us. We love hosting events but weren’t able to for so long – it’s given us plenty of time to create the perfect space for destination private dining.

“Our mission is to Think Global and Eat (and drink) local. In creating this space, we looked to some of our favourite hidden cocktail bars for inspiration.

"We want to provide a space where people can escape from the world and enjoy vibrant events, interesting company, and showcase our incredible, locally sourced food and drink. It will certainly be a talking point!”
