Top Gear's Paddy McGuinness' £250k Lamborghini crashed weeks after it failed MOT

Top Gear presenter Paddy McGuinness, 46, was involved in a horror accident after crashing a £250,000 Lamborghini that had failed its MOT just weeks before.

The crash happened during filming for new series of the show, amid reports that the car's owner was required to replace the windscreen wipers when it went for its MOT on May 1.

The vehicle safety test also found further issues with the drive shaft joints, before the car passed a re-test just three days later, the Daily Star reports.

But an advisory was issued about one of the red 1991 collectors item's back tyres and even though advisories aren't legally required to be dwelt with immediately, the DVLA warns owners to keep a close eye on them in case of emergencies.

The advisory read, "Nearside Rear Tyre worn close to legal limit/worn on edge", and while replacement tyres had been put on standby, the newspaper reported that they'd not been fitted before the crash.

Paramedics and a police crew were close by to assist Paddy, who was testing out the power motor - a Lamborghini Diablo that can reach speeds of up to 200 miles an hour.

The accident took place in the Yorkshire Dales earlier this month and Paddy - who took pictures next to the smashed vehicle - luckily sustained no major injuries.

A spokesperson for Top Gear said the car had been "extensively examined" just before filming, stating: "The cause has not yet been fully determined but the incident will be shown in the upcoming series."

The statement continued: "The car had a fully valid MOT certificate for filming and all tyres were legal and roadworthy. Top Gear also had an independent vehicle inspector extensively examine the car’s condition prior to the shoot – and a specialist supercar mechanic accompanied the production team throughout the day.

“Tyres are one of the most frequently checked aspects of the cars when we film and a replacement set were on standby should the mechanic had deemed a change necessary.”
