Top Gear in Mansfield tonight for electric car race - and crash

Three home-made battery-powered sports cars, an unexpected crash into a market stall and a few electric shocks along the way.

It can only be a synopsis for hit BBC car show Top Gear which stops off in the Nottinghamshire town of "Le Mansfield " tonight (June 23).

Freddie Flintoff, Paddy McGuinness and Chris Harris were lauded as the sitcom returned for its 27th season last week.

In the second episode tonight, the team set about making budget electric sports cars and then test them around some of the Midlands' most well-known industrial towns.

A spokesman said it is a "tour culminating in Top Gear’s inaugural urban electric endurance race: the 24 Minutes of Le Mansfield. Just like the 24 Hours of Le Mans, but shorter. And battery-powered. And in Mansfield. Cue several minutes of zero-octane, wheel-to-wheel endurance racing, one unscheduled crash test of a market stall (Flintoff, naturally), and a small amount of actual electrocution".

The team were filmed racing around Mansfield's streets in February, which included former England cricketer Flintoff's collision with a stall.

Several streets were closed off during the filming, with some nearby residents taking the chance to see the race up close and personal.

Among them was Mansfield resident Ben Charlton, who said: "There were six cars old and new racing through the town centre in some sort of time trial.

"A few of them crashed into each other's cars and into posts and at many points the racing was stopped due to people being on the track.

"They weren't holding back when they were racing and they were hitting some high speeds."

During the second episode the team also put to the test Tesla boss Elon Musk's claim his new car, the Model 3, is faster than "anything in its class". There will also be visits from Yesterday director Danny Boyle and actor Himesh Patel.

Top Gear airs on BBC Two from 8pm tonight, June 23.
