Top Gear fans declare show is 'back to its best' as Paddy McGuinness and Freddie Flintoff kick off new series

Top Gear fans declared the show “officially back to its best” after Paddy McGuinness and Freddie Flintoff kicked off the new series.

The new TV duo are in the driving seat for series 27 of the long-running show having taken over with Chris Harris, following the departure of Chris Evans and Matt LeBlanc.

Fans hailed it the “most enjoyable” since Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May left years ago.

One wrote: “#TopGear Who else thinks for the first time since Clarkson and friends, they’ve finally cracked it ???”

In charge: Paddy McGuinness and Freddie Flintoff with Chris Harris (PA)

Another said: “Loved the new #topgear last night. Great set of banter between the 3 of them. Like old times.”

“Big fan of Paddy & Freddie. 10 mins in and this has been light years ahead of the Chris Evans Matt Le Blanc debacle,” tweeted somebody else.

On Sunday night, the new-look series began with a trip to Ethiopia, with each presenter driving a version of the first car they ever owned for the festivities.

The rest of the series will see them travel the world from the Borneo rainforests to the wild icy plains of Iceland.

Closer to home, the trio will try out rally courses in Wales and even take on a shopping challenge in Mansfield.

While Take Me Out host McGuinness and cricketer Flintoff will provide the laughs, Harris has a weekly segment with car reviews for the petrol heads.

Top Gear airs weekly on Sunday at 8pm on BBC Two
