James May is to present a new motoring show on BBC2 but it won’t involve Chris Evans and it won’t be called Top Gear. Unlike Top Gear, it will be mostly about cars.
The show, Building Cars Live, will go behind the scenes of BMW’s Mini plant in Oxford where they will be building cars. Live!
May will be joined by Kate Humble and newcomer Ant Anstead – the Top Gear line-up that might have been – for the two-part show.
May, with typical Top Gear understatement, said: “I can’t wait to build a car. Live.”
Humble – a natural history star in a reasonably diverting car show – is a little bit more forthcoming.
“To be broadcasting live from the production line of one of the world’s most recognisable cars will be hugely exciting, and give us a brilliant insight into what goes into creating the vehicles we all take so much for granted,” she said.
The former Springwatch presenter is no stranger to this sort of thing having previously done Volcano Live and, er, Airport Live. Will it be a hit? Of the mini variety, presumably.
