Top five Scottish areas for some much-needed peace and quiet revealed

Lockdown restrictions are finally set to ease over the coming weeks and months - with the majority of lifting expected to happen from April 26.

But Nicola Sturgeon today indicated that easing plans could be ‘accelerated’ than previously planned as the number of new coronavirus cases continues to fall.

This could be good news for us looking to go on a much-needed 'staycation' if hotels reopen and travel restrictions are lifted.

It is likely that a number of Scots will drive off to somewhere a little more calm then their usual surroundings.

Research from Cottages in Northumberland has revealed the best places to head off for some peace and quiet from it all.

The travel firm gathered data on population count per square kilometre, as well as information on natural sanctuaries such as national parks, dark sky parks and dark sky sites.

Unsurprisingly, the Highlands took top spot as it boasts large empty areas - with the area covering 25,657 square kilometres and a population density of just nine people per square kilometre.

It is also home to beauty spots such as the Cairngorms National Park, Ben Nevis and Loch Ness.

The Highlands is also home to the highest number of dark sky parks (16) in Scotland - making it a sweet spot for stargazers.

Powys in Wales came out on top in the UK, which was followed by Northumberland and our very own Highlands.

Here is the top five areas for peace and quiet in Scotland

  • 1st - The Highlands
  • 2nd - Argyll and Bute
  • 3rd - Moray
  • 4th - Aberdeenshire
  • 5th - Perth and Kinross
