Top five Covid hotspots in Scotland - and cases show huge gender gap

The Delta Covid variant is fuelling a sharp rise in transmission of the virus across Scotland - and there's a gender gap.

Scotland's top five coronavirus affected areas are East Lothian, Dundee, Edinburgh, Midlothian and East Ayrshire.

East Lothian has overtaken Dundee as the top coronavirus hotspot where the seven day rate of positive cases per 100,000 people has risen from 260.5 to 391.3, the highest in Scotland.

It comes as a gender gap has opened up with cases as the total number testing positive in the past 24 hours hit a new record high of nearly 3,000 - just 24 hours after the previous one had been set.

New data from Scotland shows two thirds of cases in the 15 to 44 age range have been male in recent days.

Experts are baffled by the sudden spike and say "something weird is going on" following the surge in positive cases among young men.

Professor Linda Bauld, from Edinburgh University, told BBC's Good Morning Scotland said that 'something has happened over the last few days' that has caused a sharp spike in male cases that needs investigating.

She said there is no evidence to suggest it is caused by the Euro 2020 championship, but suggested it could be linked to people mixing indoors.

Behaviour expert Professor Stephen Reicher, of the University of St Andrews, said people gathering in homes and "forgetting restrictions" could be the problem - and not fans in stadiums.

The Sage subcommittee member told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "Actually, interestingly, I think the major problem with football is not people at the matches, it's people at home not taking precautions."

"I saw data yesterday from Scotland showing that whereas two or three weeks ago, the ratio of males and females, men and women, who get infections is roughly the same.

"Now it's about three times higher for younger men, and the obvious explanation for that is people meeting up at home, forgetting restrictions."
