Top European holiday destinations could 'reopen within six weeks' thanks to UK vaccine success

Popular European destination could welcome back sun-starved UK holidaymakers within six weeks, according to reports.

Hot-spots Spain, Portugal and Greece are reportedly 'leading the push' with European Union chiefs soon to meet to thrash out travel details.

The green light could be given for a return in early June - and it's all thanks to the UK's incredible vaccine success, it has been claimed.

The Sun report nations with strong vaccine figures are likely to be exempt from a blanket entry ban.

The UK is leading the way with 33,139,742 people already having their first jab, with 2,752,575 of those being in Scotland.

Some 847,655 have received their second dose in Scotland as of Wednesday.

A document seen by the publication 'cites the UK’s jabs success as a reason to let our holidaymakers back', The Mirror reports.

A senior EU official said the UK will “certainly” be one of the first countries allowed back.

A travel industry source added: “We don’t think many will exclude the UK this summer.”

It comes as Nicola Sturgeon stressed that international travel for "non-essential purposes" was "not yet permitted".

She accepted this was "difficult" for tourism and aviation industries, as well as those with family and friends overseas.

There is currently no date for international travel to be allowed to resume in Scotland and it is illegal to travel abroad for a holiday.

"We want to restore normality to international travel as quickly as possible," the First Minister said.

"But we must be sensible as we do that, in light of the risks that we face and in light of the risks we see across many parts of the world."

She added: "Until at least May 17, and possibly for a period after that, you should not leave the UK for non-essential purposes."

Sturgeon said this was important to help "protect" the progress made in tackling coronavirus in UK.
