Top End wet season back on track

Heavy monsoonal rains at the end of January has put the wet season back on track for cattle producers in the Top End of the Northern Territory.

A number of stations received more than 400 millimetres of rain in the past week, during a weather event which caused wide-spread flooding in the north.

Tony Moores from Dorisvale Station near Katherine said the rain was very welcome.

"We were a bit behind in the October through to December rain, but we've caught up quite a bit this month," he told ABC Rural.

"I don't think we've seen the sun for the last 10 to 12 days."

In the Douglas Daly region, manager of Elizabeth Downs, Bruce Wreford, said the station had recorded more than 1,000 millimetres in January and the soaking rains had transformed the country.

"The flood plains are chock-a-block; it's like an ocean looking to the north.

"It'd be nice if we got a break for a while and then for it [the monsoon] to come back in March — that would be very nice."

David Connolly from Tipperary Station said the monsoon rains late in the month were much needed.

"We've had it very dry for Tipperary up until this latest rain event, and getting over 300 millimetres in the last few days is very welcome.

"We'd like to see more rain this wet season, but what we'd like to see is a couple of weeks of good, warm weather with plenty of sun so the pastures can get going, and then we'd like [this rain] all over again, if you don't mind me sounding greedy."

A number of cattle stations enjoyed their wettest January on record, including Tanumbirini (597mm), Wave Hill (445mm) and Labelle Downs (1,138mm).
