Top doctor shares five signs of serious health issues seen on fingernails

Nails can give you a good indication of your overall health, as problems in the liver, lungs, and heart can often be displayed in your nails.

Knowing what signs to look out for could help you to identify a problem that could be lurking beneath your skin.

Dr Karanr took to his TikTok account to share with his followers what your nail health says about you.

He said: "If you've noticed these cloud-like white spots on your nail, they are common and usually normal. They can be caused by physical injury to the nail."

However, very pale nails can sometimes be a sign of serious illness such as anaemia, congestive heart failure, liver disease or malnutrition.

Dr Karanr added: "If you notice a dark streak on your nail and it's been there for a long time, and you have not injured yourself at all, and it's growing in size or shape, you should get it checked out. In rare cases, this can be a subungual melanoma, a type of skin cancer.

"If your nails look like someone has taken a tiny ice pick to them, this is called pitting. Usually caused by psoriasis, arthritis or eczema.

"If your nails are yellow, a common culprit is a fungal infection, onychomycosis. Tobacco from smoking can also stain the nails yellow."

Finally, the doctor said: "If your nails are cracking and flaking, this is an indication of brittle nails. This could be a sign of any number of nutritional deficiencies, so make sure your diet is varied."

Although nail conditions can be seen in many conditions, they are rarely the first sign of illness.

Many nail abnormalities are harmless. However, if you are concerned about the appearance of your nails, you should seek your doctor's advice.
