Top Dems in House and Senate Declare Republicans Either Lied About Epstein Evidence or Are Now Covering It Up

Top Democratic Congressmen have boiled down the controversy surrounding disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein to two possibilities: either Republicans deliberately misled the public with a conspiracy theory regarding Epstein for years, or they are attempting a cover up.

Illinois Senator Dick Durbin appeared on CNN on Tuesday morning, discussing the fallout from recent developments pertaining to Epstein's case.

"Do you now want to see the files released?" asked anchor Kate Bolduan.

"Absolutely," responded Durbin. "Leader Jeffries is right. Either they misled the American people with this conspiracy theory for years, or they're covering it up now. I joined with Senator Chris Van Hollen from Maryland during the appropriations process last week," he began.

"We offered an amendment together, and the amendment said they should preserve the evidence of the Epstein investigation and release it to the American people... The Republicans didn't want a record vote on the issue. But it really gets to the bottom line, let's let the American people see the truth," Durbin added.

Durbin's sentiments were echoes of House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries' talking points on Monday night, when speaking to reporters at the Capitol.

"The American people deserve to know the truth," he said. "What, if anything, is the Trump administration and the Department of Justice hiding?"

Jeffries advocated for Congress to intervene and force the administration to release the files if they refused to do so.

Social media users agreed with Democratic legislators, taking to online platforms to advocate for the release of the files.

"Epstein was real. He did not act alone. His accomplices, except for Ghislaine Maxwell, are still at large. It's time to release the documents to the public (with the victims' names redacted) and place these pervs in jail," said one user.

"It's both things... the conspiracy theories were great when they applied to their enemies, but now that it might hurt their king, they quickly cover it all up lest an ugly truth be revealed," said another.

"It feels like everyone is calming down and getting back to business as usual. He's getting away with it," a third added.

"Either they lied for years... or they're lying now. Either way, truth was never part of the plan. What started as a "conspiracy theory" now looks like a carefully managed con," a fourth agreed.

Trump administration Attorney General Pam Bondi recently reneged on earlier statements claiming that Epstein's client list was "sitting on [her] desk", more recently claiming that the list did not exist in line with the rest of the administration's rhetoric. Furthermore, the Department of Justice released hours worth of footage allegedly depicting the outside of Epstein's jail cell, supposedly proving that the financier did, in fact, kill himself. However, the footage had allegedly been edited, having been composed from two different source videos and having been exported multiple times.
