Top cop blasts yobs who illegally ride quad bikes

A police chief has blasted bikers who are continuing to cause a nuisance to Wishaw and Shotts residents by riding quads near their homes.

Over the weekend, five quad bikes and one motorcycle were seen riding on the public path heading towards the football fields near Cambusnethan Street in Wishaw.

Meanwhile at Breslin Terrace in Shotts, reports were given to cops of a large green and smaller black quads travelling in a nearby park at speed with no regard to anyone walking on the footpaths and nearby streets.

Inspector Alan Mulholland re-iterated his recent comments condemning the use of off road bikes and quads in public places.

He said: “The community officers in Shotts and Wishaw are looking to identify addresses the bikes are being used from alongside seizing and reporting the riders found in circumstances where their use is deemed unlawful.

“These bikes are a danger to people walking their dogs, using the public footpaths and nature trails.

“Anyone found in these circumstances will have them seized from them and will be reported with a view to gaining points on their licences/provisional licences.

“In the case of younger people riding bikes, I don’t think their parents realise how dangerous this activity is when done in public places and that they too may be subject of being charged for causing and permitting the use of the bikes.

“I am committed to challenging peoples attitude towards this and if it means sending a tough message by seizing peoples bikes, then that is what we will do.

“There are bike tracks, professionally run throughout the country where it is safe to ride but the footpaths isn’t and it will not be tolerated.”
