Top cop appeals to West Dunbartonshire residents to help address their biggest concerns

A top cop has appealed to the community to tell them what their biggest worries are that the police can address.

People across West Dunbartonshire are being urged to speak up and tell officers what they think should be made priorities in the area.

More focus will be put on directing resources to where they need to be after a successful pilot last summer.

A taskforce was established across Dumbarton, Alexandria and Clydebank and saw teams sent to hotspots as and when issues arose.

Chief Inspector Scott Carlin said: “We had three teams to give more of a flexible, agile operation to go to address various problems such as at Balloch Park, Bowling Harbour or St James Retail Park where kids were hanging about McDonalds.

“It had a significant impact on the trend we were seeing and the rise of serious violence.

“Based on that, it’s the way we will start looking at going forward.

“Local people do tell us what the local problems are but because there are no beat cops, we don’t often get the chance to engage with people directly.

“This is the opportunity for people to tell us what their priority is. We need people to engage with us.”

To be able to direct resources to the right areas, officers rely on intelligence from communities and information on what they expect to see from the police locally.

A consultation is running allowing residents to have their say on how they think the police should be operating.

CI Carlin added: “That will be a three-year plan delivering resources so people can gauge our success or failure. That’s really, really important for us.”
