Top Cheshire family farm attraction hit with 'ZERO-star' food hygiene rating

A farm attraction popular with families has been slapped with a 'zero-star' food hygiene rating.

Wheelock Hall Farm in Sandbach, Cheshire, has branded the ruling 'very, very unfair' - and said improvements were implemented immediately after the inspection.

The farm boasts a large outdoor play area with an assault course for children, swings, go-karts and tractor rides, reports Cheshire Live.

There's pigs, sheep, goats and other animals for little ones, as well as a farm shop, tea room and extensive garden centre.

But like just 672 other establishments in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, the farm now holds a zero-rated hygiene score.

More than 543,059 are inspected by the Food Standards Agency (FSA).

Zero star ratings account for just over 0.1 per cent of all ratings issued in the UK.

A report from Cheshire East Council states that 'urgent improvement' must be made in the farm shop's 'management of food safety... to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat'.

It also states that 'major improvement' is necessary in the 'preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage' of food.

Getting the worst possible hygiene rating is extremely rare, with Wheelock Hall Farm one of only four establishments in Cheshire to be handed a zero rating by the FSA.

It is one of only two establishments in the Cheshire East area adjudged to be worthy of the rating on the FSA's zero to five scale.

A spokesman for Wheelock Hall Farm said action was taken immediately after the inspection.

But a subsequent inspection wasn't then carried out.

They said: "Everything that was asked from us by the officer was done immediately in an urgent manner and they've not made another visit.

"It's very, very unfair.

"The standard that we work to has been a strong standard we've worked to for 30 years."

Wheelock Hall Farm is a family-run business that has operated for three decades.

It's open 364 days a year, closing only on Christmas Day.
