Top chef shows how to cut an onion properly - and we've been doing it wrong

A chef has revealed her incredibly simple method for cutting an onion - and lots of people have been doing it wrong.

TikTok star Poppy O'Toole, who is more commonly known as PoppyCooks, shared the video on her account claiming it would "change your life."

She added: "This is one of the first techniques you learn when becoming a chef."

Firstly, you cut the top off your onion and peel the skin off.

Poppy recommends chopping it horizontally first, in order to maintain a straighter cut.

Be sure to keep the root intact as you slice three or four times.

Then cut it six times vertically but again keep the root intact, before beginning to chop.

Use your knuckle as a protector as you cut toward the root - and you'll be left with perfectly cubed chunks of onion.

The chef, who trained in Michelin-star restaurant Purnell's in Birmingham, has 1.3m followers and an upcoming book after becoming a star on TikTok.

Her video explaining how to cut an onion properly has been viewed more than 2.6 million times.

Thousands of people have left comments - with many admitting they had been doing it wrong before watching the video.

One viewer commented: "All the times I've removed the root first, it makes so much sense to remove it last.

"Can't wait to try this."

Another joked: "Tell me why my eyes watered while I watched this video."

A third said: "Thank you. I love cooking and never did that.

"I just destroy the onion in pieces but this way is defo better."

Another admitted: "I've been doing it wrong for years.

"This method makes so much more sense - I want to make onion soup now."
