Top chef shares key to making perfect mashed potato using two unusual ingredients

There are some staple dishes that all foodies should get under their belt, no matter what their level of culinary expertise may be. This of course includes mashed potatoes - a fail-safe comfort food that can taste absolutely magical once you take it to the next level.

Now top chef Robbie Bell, the owner and head charcutier at Melbourne's City Larder, has shared his go-to recipe for mashed potatoes, which includes two unexpected ingredients.

The British-born chef, who has previously worked for the likes of Heston Blumenthal, firmly believes, "if there's one recipe in the world you've got to learn - it has to be mashed potato", a dish he reckons everybody should learn.

Taking to TikTok, where he goes by the username @robbiebell8, Robbie used potatoes, butter, salt, pepper, olive oil, milk, nutmeg, milk, and lemon to whip up some blissfully creamy mash.

In the vid, Robbie could be seen peeling and cutting his potatoes into equal sizes, before simmering them gently in a pot of salted water.

The boiled tatties were then drained, dried, and set aside, before being put through a mouli press - they can also just be mashed if you prefer - and added to a saucepan of butter.

Once the mashed potatoes were in the saucepan, Robbie added olive oil, milk, and a sprinkle of nutmeg, giving this "a bit of a whirl" with a spatula, before tasting to see if any more seasoning was needed.

After adding a bit more salt and pepper to taste, Robbie added a squeeze of lemon, surprising some of his foodie followers, who were also a bit taken aback by the nutmeg.

He explained: "We love a bit of acidity, so a little bit of lemon, it's as simple as that. I love it with bangers!"

Many of Robbie followers were left keen to give it a try for themselves, although some were surprised to see nutmeg and lemon in the mix.

One person commented: "Lemon in mash? What? Never heard of that in my life."

Another wrote: "Nutmeg and lemon. Ohhhhhh next time."
