Top bands heading to Dumfries for Doonhame Festival

A host of top bands are lined up for this weekend’s Doonhame Festival in Dumfries.

The Waterboys, Alabama 3, Bad Manners, The Feeling and Kyle Falconer are among the acts appearing at the two-day event which starts today.

Organiser Sandy Sweetman is expecting up to 2,000 people to attend the festival site at the Crichton.

And he is keeping his fingers crossed that things go smoothly after last year’s disappointment when the Kaiser Chiefs were due to headline only for the plug to be pulled due to a change in Covid regulations just days before the event.

He said: “We had the first festival at short notice in 2019 with mostly local artists and it was well attended.

“Then we were meant to go again in 2020 and it was cancelled well in advance due to Covid.

“In 2021 we were just two weeks out when they changed the rules on public distancing. We had everything lined up and it all got cancelled.

“This is us picking up now. We had hoped to keep the same line-up but the Kaiser Chiefs were unable to come but the addition of The Waterboys has gone down well.”

Alabama 3 top the bill tonight and other acts lined up include Toploader and Skerryvore.

Saturday’s line-up include local band The Lutras and Colonel Mustard and the Dijon Five.

As well as the main stage, there is the Big Top, which features local groups during the day and becomes a dance tent at night, and The Globe Inn Smooth Sounds Stage.

In addition to the main festival, there is a Doonhame Kids event at the site between noon and 4pm on Sunday featuring tribute acts to the likes of Little Mix.

Tickets for both events are available at the festival website.
