Hollywood actor Ciaran Hinds has warned of explosive storylines in RTE crime drama Kin which he said is about to go off “like a
firework”.
One episode in the eight-part series has already divided viewers with complaints to the broadcaster over violent scenes and claims that it’s “no Love/Hate”.
But Belfast man Hinds – whose back catalogue includes Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, Red Sparrow and Road To
Perdition – insisted it’s about to come into its own.
Promising plenty of drama as the season progresses he said writer Peter McKenna’s crime saga would feature explosive storylines.
Hinds said: “He’s lit the fuse. The fuse is starting to burn and he suggests that you retire, because it’s going to get very hot.”
Speaking on The Late Late Show, the star told how the positive reaction to the season opener, which drew an audience of more than 500,000, was a good omen.
He added: “I’m really thrilled because when you set up a show at the beginning, there’s a lot of characters to introduce.
“There’s a lot of dynamics to get going and that builds up through the storyline. I think it bodes very well for the story.” Tonight’s episode sees the Kinsellas deal with the fallout of the Cunningham’s brutal retaliation as Frank (Aidan Gillen) tries to avoid an all-out war.
A grief-stricken Amanda (Clare Dunne) takes a more central role within the clan as she pursues revenge for the callous murder of her son.
Clare, whose character has been described as the female Tony Soprano, said: “People are gripped, people are talking and I think that’s the main thing.
“It’s really grabbing people of all ages. That’s what I love about it.”
The star of hit movie Herself revealed she’d held back on her normal research while preparing for the role of a woman who marries into a crime family and launders their money in a car dealership.
She added: “I had to do a lot of research on how you launder money and I still couldn’t get my head around it. I was like, ‘I’d be really bad at this’.
“I remember talking to Peter the writer and he asked me to avoid getting too deep into stuff that wouldn’t be her world. She keeps her hands clean.
“Her journey is only getting more involved in that as it goes along, so he wanted me to feel like that was really authentic.
“So I didn’t delve too deep, but I listened to podcasts and read books.”
