The survey also revealed that three-quarters of travelers will be taking road trips to their destination, often in search of outdoor sports, hiking and another favorite fall pastime: leaf-peeping.
With affordability in mind, a separate survey from HomeToGo pinpointed America’s top spots for leaf peeping. You can find breathtaking destinations from coast to coast for under $60 per night for accommodations.
Weston, Vermont
Median Accommodation Price: $34.37
Situated in scenic southern Vermont, Weston is a tiny town with just over 600 permanent residents as of 2020. But it’s a mecca for snow sports in the winter, including cross-country skiing and snowboarding, and breathtaking foliage in the fall.
HomeToGo ranked the town a 10 for affordability and 9.6 for being a “hidden gem.” And with median accommodations per person at just $34.37 per night, it almost costs more to stay home.

Pella, Iowa
Median Accommodation Price: $45.63
Pella, Iowa, also earned high marks for affordability and being a “hidden gem,” with median accommodations at $45.63. And you might be surprised by how much there is to do in this Midwest town.
Pella borders Iowa’s largest lake, Lake Red Rock, offering kayaking or canoeing. For a fabulous view of autumn scenery, make sure to climb the Cordova Park Observation Tower. When you’ve had your fill of the great outdoors, head downtown. Travel blogger Chelsea Derks Modde at TravelIowa.com called it “super cute and filled with local shops, restaurants and bakeries.”
You can find private rentals for around $45 per night, or splurge a little for a stay at The Amsterdam Hotel, which offers boutique luxury for a fraction of big-city prices.
Newberry, Michigan

Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is known for its pristine forests, varied wildlife and freezing temps — so get there before it cools down too much. Bordering Lake Superior, Newberry is ranked as a Pure Michigan Trail Town, recognized for its conservation efforts, natural beauty and outdoor recreation. It’s also known as the Moose Capital of Michigan, so keep your eyes open for these majestic creatures.
If you miss the leaf-peeping window, plan your trip for snowmobiling across 128 miles of groomed trails. Either way, your accommodation costs won’t be moose-sized. Vacation rentals average under $50 per night, according to HomeToGo, or you can find hotels starting around $98, per TripAdvisor.
Nederland, Colorado

Located in Boulder County, Nederland has fewer than 1,500 residents and is one of the most affordable spots for fall tourism. Close to Rocky Mountain National Park and Roosevelt National Forest, it offers plenty to see and do — along with glorious foliage.
Train Cars Coffee is a must-stop for train-loving kids and caffeine-deprived adults alike. You can see an original circus car from 1872 that once toured with Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show, along with a plush wooden coach and plenty of railroad history. Red Lodge, Montana
