Top 25 cities to live in the world revealed – but no UK city makes the list

The top 25 cities to live in the world has been announced with Europe, Australia and Japan dominating the list.

Tokyo took the crown for 'liveability' with Japan also represented by Fukuoka, in seventh, and Kyoto, ninth.

Berlin, popular with digital entrepreneurs and known for its capped rent prices, took second spot, followed by Vienna, Copenhagen and Munich.

London was conspicuous by its absence, despite being hailed as one of the most loved cities in the world.

Indeed, not a single British city made the list compiled by Monocle magazine, in contrast to Germany which had no less than four cities in the ranking.

The researchers at Monocole included 22 new metrics this year when assessing which cities offered the highest quality of life, with most focussed on the cost of living.

Although this explains London's absence from the list, some of the world's most expensive cities, such as Copenhagen in fourth, made up for high prices because of their low crime rates, bicycle-friendly layout and top knotch public services.

London was named the most expensive place in the world for workers to live for the third year in a row this March.

The US was similarly left trailing with only Portland, Oregon, (24th) and Honolulu in Hawaii (23rd) making the list, while Canada managed also two with Montreal (25th) and Vancouver (11th).

From first to last, here is Monocle's list of the world's top 25 cities:
