Top 20 countries we're most likely to revisit as Brits stuck in a holidaying rut

Britain is stuck in a holidaying rut with millions going to the same destinations year-on-year.

A poll of 2,000 adults found nearly nine in 10 have returned to a location they had already visited.

Brits have, on average, packed up and headed to the same familiar holiday spot five times.

But a tenth have been back to the same place FIFTEEN times or more.

The study, commissioned by ebookers, also found more than three quarters don't just go back to the same places time and again, they even enjoy the same activities.

A new 'holiday generator' tool went live today to help travellers find new destinations and places to stay, by answering a series of simple questions.

Liz Oakman, general manager at ebookers, said: "Despite the world of travel being more open than ever, it seems people are sticking to the tried-and-true.

"Our results found millions of Brits are shying away from new experiences and spending their precious annual leave somewhere they know they'll love.

"There are lots of reasons for returning to a holiday destination you've already enjoyed - so many don't want to take a risk."

The study found one in five are stuck in a holiday rut because it takes the stress out of planning where to go, while 13 per cent return to already-seen places because the kids enjoy it.

A quarter want to go somewhere they know will have bars and restaurants they enjoy, and 35 per cent want guaranteed sunshine.

Half of the population have re-visited Spain, while 23 per cent love to revisit the USA, and a third go back to France again and again.

And when returning to a country they've already been to, while 32 per cent will try a new town or city, 34 per cent will go back to the same resort.

As many as three in 10 have revisited Paris, a fifth have been back to Amsterdam and nearly one in 10 have travelled all the way to Las Vegas on more than one occasion.

The poll also found 14 per cent of besotted travellers have loved a holiday destination so much they've actually bought a property there.

And one in five have ended up in a row with their partner because they couldn't agree whether to go somewhere new or stick with the tried-and-trusted destination.

Only a third of respondents have ever booked a holiday spontaneously, according to the OnePoll.com research.

Liz Oakman added: "Our tool will help you get out of any holiday ruts you may be stuck in.

"If you like beaches, there are beaches all over the world - likewise, if you want a city break there's no need to go back to the same place time and again.

"But at the end of the day, there's a lot to be said for comfort and going somewhere you feel at home - so we say re-book if that's the way you feel, but don't rule out staying somewhere different or trying a new activity while you're there."
