Top 15 biggest transfer spenders this century as Chelsea and Man City lead the way

It will come as little surprise to many to discover that the Premier League boasts six of the highest spending clubs since the turn of the century.

The English league has long been the most powerful when it comes to flexing their financial muscles, simply down to the fact it has so many clubs able to.

While the likes of La Liga and Serie A have two or three at most, Ligue 1 and the Bundesliga even less - the fact that the Premier League is the most watched division in the world has at least helped contribute to some of the clubs astronomical spending power.

Few prizes for guessing which two outfits come first and second, with Chelsea sitting pretty at the top - forking out £2.15bn since the 2000/01 season.

The Blues were the first club in the Premier League to reap the rewards of a single, eye-wateringly wealthy owner in the form of Roman Abramovich, who pumped the west-London based outfit with funds after his takeover in 2003.

Since his arrival, huge transfer fees have become the norm - the Blues breaking the transfer record as recently as the summer just gone after paying Inter Milan £98m to bring Romelu Lukaku back to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea are closely followed by Manchester City in the spending stakes, with the five-time Premier League winners splurging £1.9bn, the majority of which would have come post-2008 following Sheikh Mansour's takeover.

Much like Chelsea, City also broke their club transfer record in the window just gone, Jack Grealish becoming the first British £100m player as Pep Guardiola enticed him to the Etihad from Aston Villa.

Third and fourth spot are occupied by the two main Spanish giants in Real Madrid and Barcelona, both forking out €2.2bn over the last 21 years, though the latter now arguably paying the price for their financial mismanagement.

Having paid over the odds for players who have failed to make the grade, Barcelona are aiming to adopt a different approach with Xavi now at the helm, though they have made Ferran Torres his first Barca signing for €55m.

The first Serie A representative comes in at fifth, Juventus spending €2.1bn - putting them just in front of Manchester United, who have mustered up £1.67bn.

The Red Devils spent over £135m last summer alone after luring the likes of Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo to Old Trafford.

Surprisingly, Inter Milan and Paris Saint-Germain sit level in seventh in terms of spend with €1.7bn, despite their incredibly contrasting current financial situations.

Inter were forced to sell Lukaku in the summer due to being in such a perilous economic situation, while PSG can comfortably pay the wages of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar to name just three of their star-studded line-up.

PSG still hold the record for most expensive transfer fee ever, when they lured Neymar to the French capital for a fee of €222m.

Liverpool come in at ninth, despite the perception that the Reds are reluctant to spend, splashing out £1.3bn, central defender Virgil van Dijk a club-record signing for £76m.

Both AC Milan and Atletico Madrid have spent €1.5bn, while north London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham are also level when it comes to transfer spend - £1.1bn over the last 21 years.

Though they have enjoyed contrasting decades in terms of honours won, AS Roma have actually spent more than German giants Bayern Munich, with the Italians total expenditure coming in at €1,4bn, in comparison to Bayern's €1.1bn.
