Top 10 Scottish Covid and Omicron hotspots as daily cases hit record high of 20,000

Today's Covid figures in Scotland revealed a record breaking 20,217 new cases - the highest daily figure so far in the pandemic.

A whopping 34.9 percent of 65,860 tests were positive today.

Previously, the record for new cases in a day was 15,849 on December 29, 2021.

The Scottish Government released headline figures today instead of detailed data, which hasn't been updated since December 31.

The government stated that the New Year weekend - and the large volume of tests - have caused delays in reporting test results.

Public Health Scotland is "continuing to monitor the situation".

In Scotland 4,383,212 people have received their first vaccination whilst 4,017,051 have received their second dose.

The Scottish Government said detailed data will return on January 5.

There were 17,065 new cases on January 1 and a further 14,080 positive cases on January 2.

Figures from December 31 report a total of 13,649 Omicron cases in Scotland.

Nicola Sturgeon is set to give the first Covid update of the year on Wednesday.
