Top 10: London Collections Men
Trend alert! Yellow is THE colour for SS13. Seen in abundance at E Tautz, the shorts and cashmere knits were especially fetching. Menswear newcomer Richard Nicoll showed a fisherman-look cagoule top and shorts combo. While off the catwalk the trendsetters were already ahead of the curve: Mr Porter's Jeremy Langmead sat front row in yellow trousers, and our style watchers noticed this jolly pocket square and flash of ankle socks among the fashion pack. Yellow: easier to wear than you think.

The MAN collective was a resounding success for all three designers showing, but our favourite was Agi & Sam's Granddad meets Magnum PI collection, inspired by childhood memories of watching TV at their grandparents' houses. An excellent use of print taken from wallpaper and a chintzy tapestry, digitally reworked, made a quirky yet very wearable collection. Every exit was styled with socks and sandals, the surprise runaway trend of the week (the style jury is still out on that one). Photograph: PR

Jonathan Saunders menswear continues to go from from strength to strength. The knitwear is exceptional and the colour palette diverse, but shrinking violets need not worry: it's not all brightly patterned – there are well-cut navy jackets and a "goes over everything" black mac. These are pieces you will pull out of your wardrobe for years to come. Photograph: H Seamons/Guardian

Christopher Shannon always gives good backpack. For SS13 he has collaborated with the Cambridge Satchel Company to produce a fringed, oversized satchel-backpack hybrid. We predict a long waiting list. The trend continued at Topman Design, where a welcome return to upbeat colour from arguably the founder brand of this men's fashion week saw West Coast meets East Coast dudes carrying huge rucksacks complete with skateboards. Take note, style watchers: get a bag – make it big. Photograph: H Seamons/Guardian

The Fashion East installations at St James's surpassed themselves this season. Everyone was talking about Meadham Kirchhoff and their den of grungy pastel-haired Kurt Cobain models. Empty Pepto-Bismol bottles, half-eaten soggy bowls of cornflakes, pizza boxes and wilting floral tributes dressed the squat-like rooms as the models lounged on mattresses strewn with retro cartoon-print duvets. It was as beautiful as it was disturbing. Photograph: H Seamons/Guardian

T.Lipop's "Day of the Dead" inspired installation at Fashion East featured models in magnificent Mexican-skull face paint in closets decorated in vivid flowers. Fashionwise the floral-print trousers stood out (printed trousers continue to be a trend for next summer – if you splashed out on the Burberry Ikat ones this summer, feel duly smug), as did the collaboration with Del Toro: a vibrant set of skull-embroidered velvet slippers were the result. Kit Neale's prints are something worth shouting about. Lobsters, crabs, fighter jets and traditional Inca patterns made up the basis for the collection. Looks were finished with Reebok classics and motorcycle helmets showcased on the back of a giant green snake called Sidney. Another hit for Fashion East. Photograph: H Seamons/Guardian

American sportswear emerged as a trend during the weekend's shows. At Lou Dalton the collection silhouette included baseball jackets, bowling shirts and sweatshirts mixed with Dalton's modern tailoring. Over at Sibling, there was an American football flavour to the knitwear collection. Football jerseys and pants were shown in lurex knits, and baseball caps embroidered by Hawthorne & Heaney of north London and cheerleader pompom headdresses finished the look. In a city where Savile Row tailoring forms the backbone to the industry, it would be remiss not to include some tailoring in the week's highlights. The insider word from the buyers was that Mr Start's collection was something special. The SS13 collection had a more relaxed feel, introducing a polo shirt and a woven T-shirt for the first time and updating the traditional Mr Start look, striking the perfect formal-meets-casual balance. Thom Browne stopped traffic outside Harrods as he hosted a mini concert performance from band Wolf Gang atop a London bus. The only passengers, 20 models kitted out in matching signature seersucker stripes, boarded and disembarked throughout the presentation. Here's hoping that next season he brings the full collection to London. Photograph: H Seamons/Guardian
