Newcastle United fans carry out clean-up operation after thousands descend on Trafalgar Square

Toon fans carried out a clean-up operation after thousands descended on Trafalgar Square for a night of celebration.

Ahead of the Carabao Cup final clash against Manchester Utd, crowds of Newcastle supporters took over the London plaza on Saturday night as they prepared for the club's first Wembley final in almost three decades. Supporters sang and danced throughout the night, with Sam Fender and his bandmates even joining in on the epic party.

But as the happy crowds cleared off to get some well earned sleep in the early hours of the morning, a group of considerate supporters took it upon themselves to stay behind and clear up the mess that had been left behind. Pictures and videos of the clean-up operation circulated on social media, with many commenting that "everyone had grabbed a bag".

Those who stayed behind to pick up the rubbish were praised online, for helping to leave Trafalgar Square as they found it.

In preparation for the cup clash, many businesses across the North East, including pubs, restaurants and shops, have decorated their windows with NUFC themed designs.

Andy Morley, who runs Creative Ginger, has created a number of the window designs. He said they have been inundated with requests over the past few weeks.

The 55-year-old artist, from Denton Burn, Newcastle, said: "I didn't set out to do them. We did Charlotte's Flowers and it just went from there.

"Everyone is wanting to have one done. We're trying our best to fit people in. Everyone if going mad for the Magpie called Monty and everyone wants the Wembley song. It's a big thing for Newcastle to get through to the final. Everybody is buzzing and everybody is looking forward to the match. It's nice to see the region getting behind the local football team."
