Toon fan wins one-year legal battle with Swedish court to change his name to 'Newcastle'

A Swedish man has taken his love for Newcastle United to a whole new level after changing his name to 'Newcastle'.

Rolf Corneliusson, 54, has supported the Magpies for half a century and has travelled to watch them more than 100 times.

His affiliation with the club began when he was a child and is down to his dad Lennart, a fisherman who often worked off the east coast of England.

He told the Expressen: "Sometimes they went ashore and saw Newcastle play. In 1969, after the cup victory, he came home with Newcastle stuff to me. Since then, I'm stuck."

Rolf originally applied for a name change at the tax office after wanting to participate in a competition that you needed to be called or have tried to use a nickname as your name.

His son Mick, 29, is named after former Newcastle forward Micky Quinn while daughter Louise, 27, is named after Geordie legend Kevin Keegan's wife.

And when his grandson came along, he was named Tino after former star Faustino Asprilla.

The PE teacher - who now officially has Newcastle in his name - can never hide no matter how his favourite team are getting on.

Rolf says his pupils will never let him forget when his beloved Newcastle United lose.

He said: "The slightly older children of five, six and seven can say congratulations after a victory.

"But the day after a loss, some five to six-year-olds usually get instructions from their parents: 'Ask Rolf how things went in the match'."

After an initial application was rejected by the Swedish Tax Agency, his appeal was heard by the Administrative Court.

Rolf argued in his application that he knew others who had been given names such as Premier League rivals Arsenal and Chelsea.

But again he was unsuccessful after the court decided Newcastle did not fit in with "prevailing linguistic norms" of Swedish naming tradition.

He refused to give up, claiming that many people in his area knew him as Newcastle - a club he had followed for half a century - and that it had become a major part of his life and personality.

After a year-long battle, Rolf has now been given the green light by the Court of Appeals after they concluded Newcastle was not inappropriate within the meaning of section 28 of the Personal Names Act.

His is now known as Rolf Lennart Newcastle Corneliusson and he says he cannot wait for his next trip to St James' Park when the Magpies take on Burnley later this month.

He also plans to pop into see friends at the famous Strawberry pub where he will celebrate with a Newcastle Brown Ale.

He told the Expressen: "It will be a huge joy.

"And I now have a Strawberry tattoo with those for Newcastle, it will be free drinking."
