Why do alcohol websites ask us to verify our age? It kinda seems like a strange thing to do since we're pretty sure most people either refuse to look at the website or give a fake birthday.
No doubt straighty one-eighties give their real birthday. But then, most straighty one-eighties don't even drink alcohol.
Apparently there's no law that makes websites put age-verification in place. It's there to deter youth from looking at alcohol information. [Think of the children!]
All this came to mind as we were having a gander at the Tooheys website.
A media release had dropped in our inbox titled "Tooheys celebrates 150 years in Newcastle".
"Tooheys invites the good people of Newcastle and the Hunter Region to join in the celebrations, which will kick off at 1pm on Saturday at Bar 88 at Wests New Lambton.
"Punters will be treated to footy snacks and birthday cake, live music, merchandise giveaways, Tooheys bar shouts and the chance to rub shoulders with some Tooheys legends including ambassador Doug Walters and Kangaroos, Bulldogs and Blues star Andrew 'Bobcat' Ryan."
Dougie Walters is, of course, renowned for drinking 44 beers on a plane trip from Australia to England for the Ashes series.
David Boon holds the record, having sunk 52 beers on the same route.
Apparently Dougie disputes Boonie's record because Boonie's drinking session began inside the airport, not on the plane.
Boonie aside, Andrew Wilcox of Wests Group reckons Wests members vote Tooheys "number one" every day. [He could be just saying that to promote Tooheys, but we'll take him at his word. Plus, if he was "just saying that", the brand that really was the most popular would be pretty peeved]
The media release went on to say that long-time Tooheys employee Doug May said the brand embodies "mateship, sociability, sport, celebrating and kicking back". [And all blokes named Doug]
Tooheys brand director Amy Darvill said Tooheys and NSW "go hand-in-hand and always have".
"We would like to say an extra big thank you to the people of Newcastle and the Hunter, who are extremely loyal to the brand as proven by the strong sales we continue to see in the region," Amy said. [It was our pleasure, Amy]
Tooheys will release a special edition 150th birthday retro can. And for the first time in more than 20 years, Tooheys Country Special will be sold in selected venues across the state, including Wests clubs.
Splash and Crash

Lake Macquarie councillor Kevin Baker rolled onto the floor of the council chambers at Speers Point on Monday night with this weird contraption.
Kevin told Herald journalist Max McKinney that he broke his foot when he slipped and fell on a kid's waterslide in the SpongeBob SquarePants Splash Bash area at Sea World on the Gold Coast.
