Toohey's News, the Podcast: Steve Simpson was the toughest of the Newcastle Knights

Listen to the latest episode of Toohey's News: The Podcast on Apple, Google, Spotify, or wherever you like to listen.

Given the calibre of tough players to pull on the red and blue of the Newcastle Knights over the past 33 seasons, being rated up there with the toughest is no mean feet.

Steve Simpson, the boy from Broke, deserves the accolade. The raw-boned backrower played 216 games for the club over 12 seasons and was largely an unsung hero of the 2001 premiership triumph, scoring a try and coming up with one of the greatest try-saving tackles of all time in a big match.

He was a straight shooter on the field and a straight shooter off it. A real salt of the earth character and true club legend.
