From day one at the Newcastle Knights to his life after football, Mark Sargent's career has put him - to uses his own words - in a group of one.
The Newcastle Knights legend and former Kangaroos prop made his run-on debut with the Bulldogs against Manly in 1986. A twist of fate meant that his call-up to the NRL came the morning of the game.
"It's not the best prep, getting thrown into your starting debut the morning of the game," he told the Knights in an interview in 2019 - but so started the 148-game career of a legend.
Even after football, Sargent's life continued to place him in his group of one - in 2012 he was confirmed with a PhD in public policy with work exploring NSW gambling tax regulations, particularly those involving electronic gaming machines.
As a player and eventual Knights administrator, Sargent's career has been peppered with levity, dramatic clashes, and in episode 16 of Toohey's News, he recounts them all with Newcastle Herald sports journalist Barry Toohey.
