’Too soon to give up’: Trump hits back at McConnell for admitting election defeat

Hours after powerful Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell admitted President-elect Joe Biden won the election, President Donald Trump lashed out at his sometime GOP ally for throwing in the towel too early.

“Too soon to give up. Republican Party must finally learn to fight. People are angry!” Trump tweeted early Wednesday morning.

Trump shared an article quoting some of his hardline #MAGA supporters trashing McConnell for not continuing to deny the reality of Biden’s victory.

Some of the Trump backers called McConnell and others GOP lawmakers who have congratulated Biden as RINOs, meaning “Republicans In Name Only,” a dreaded epithet for those on the far right. Incoming Rep. Marjorie Greene, R-Ga., put quote marks around the word “Republican” in a tweet about McConnell, a sign of derision for true believers.

McConnell hoped that the Electoral College vote for Biden on Monday would allow him to turn the page from Trump’s damaging dead-end effort to overturn the results of the election.

He may have also hoped to prod Trump into accepting his defeat, especially as other GOP leaders followed suit. But that looks like wishful thinking.

Trump seems intent on continuing to insist that he won the election, even claiming that it was a #MAGA landslide.

In reality, Biden won a sprawling victory of more than 7 million votes and 306 electoral votes.

More than 50 lawsuits challenging the election results have been dismissed, including two Hail Mary efforts that the conservative-dominated Supreme Court unanimously swatted away.
