‘Too heavy’ easyJet plane asks passengers to leave before take off

  • Five passengers voluntarily disembarked an easyJet flight from London Southend to Malaga after the aircraft was deemed overweight for the prevailing weather conditions and the airport's short runway.
  • Flight EJU7008, scheduled for Saturday morning, faced safety concerns, leading the airline to offer passengers options including volunteers leaving the flight, removing luggage, or cancelling the departure.
  • Passengers were given 30 minutes to decide, with the option for six individuals to disembark to allow the flight to proceed.
  • London Southend Airport's main runway measures 1,856 metres, which is considerably shorter than other major aviation hubs like Stansted Airport, contributing to the weight restrictions.
  • The disembarked customers were provided with transport and a later flight to Malaga from London Gatwick, along with compensation, while the original flight departed just 12 minutes behind schedule.
