Loose Women fans were left completely gobsmacked and seriously unimpressed on Tuesday after the panel launched into a rather morbid discussion that had many reaching for the remote.
The show, which aired live on 11 June, started off as expected, with host Ruth Langsford joined by Mariella Frostrup, Janet Street-Porter and Kéllé Bryan to chew over the latest headlines. The usual mix of current affairs and entertainment was on the table, including chatter about the government’s U-turn on the winter fuel payment and reactions to the new series of Love Island, which had just kicked off the night before on ITV2, reported the Express.
But things took a seriously strange turn when the panel introduced a topic that had viewers clutching their stomachs and not in a good way.
Ruth opened the discussion with what can only be described as one of the most eyebrow-raising intros the show has had in a while. “Saying goodbye to your loved ones usually involves a burial or a cremation, but a new method boil in the bag funerals could soon be made available across the UK,” she said.
She went on to explain that this process, more properly known as water cremation, involves breaking the body down in a heated mix of water and alkaline chemicals. What’s left is liquid, which goes straight into the drain, and bones, which are ground into ash.
“Some people say that it’s more eco-friendly, while others say it sounds horribly undignified,” she added, before inviting the rest of the panel to share their thoughts.
Mariella Frostrup didn’t hold back, saying she was not on board with the idea at all. “The rivers and seas are already polluted enough,” she said. “So, I don’t really know if I want to add my body or anybody else’s to it.”
Janet Street-Porter, on the other hand, was surprisingly upbeat about the concept. “I’m 100 percent in favour,” she said, although she did point out her concerns about artificial limbs and what happens to them in the process.
While the panel debated the pros and cons of the futuristic funeral technique, many viewers at home were less than impressed, especially considering it was all playing out during lunchtime.
Social media was quickly flooded with reactions, mostly from horrified fans who hadn’t expected such a graphic subject to pop up mid-sarnie.
“Just turned TV on during my lunch break at work, and what a disgusting lunchtime topic!! Quickly switched off,” one viewer posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Another added, “What on earth is this topic?” while a third viewer said bluntly, “As you are a lunchtime programme, should you be discussing boil in the bag funerals? It certainly put me off my lunch! Being flushed down the loo don’t really appeal to me.”
It’s not unusual for Loose Women to tackle big or bold subjects, but judging by the reaction online, this one might have pushed the lunchtime limit a bit too far.
