'Too early' - Nottingham Forest sent brutal Steve Cooper warning after contract surprise

Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson believes Nottingham Forest moved "a bit too early" to give head coach Steve Cooper a new contract.

Cooper penned a new three-year deal at the City Ground yesterday amid reports that there were serious doubts over his future. It was claimed that his contract offer had been taken off the table, with Forest looking into potential replacements.

Despite the dramatic turnaround that took many by surprise, Robinson believes Forest should have delayed the new contract given the team's difficult start to life back in the Premier League.

“When he took over they were in the bottom three of the Championship and he got them promoted, which is incredible," Robinson told BetfredTV. "They’ve taken a big risk this year by signing 22 players and it’s not gelling at the moment.

"They’ve been really, really poor, so for the owners to offer him a new contract is a huge vote of confidence for him and it settles everyone down at the club. If they continue the way they’ve been going then I believe we will get to Christmas and people will be saying new contract or no new contract, is his job in doubt?

"The owners may believe that if they go down into the Championship that he’s the right man to bring them back up. If they have a long term plan then you have to give the club credit for that. For me, I believe they moved a bit too early on the new contract.”
