Too cool for Yule or old-school scorcher? Here's your final national Christmas Day forecast

Parts of Queensland aren't likely to be so sunny tomorrow.

As Father Christmas prepares the sleigh and families around Australia make last-minute dashes to the shops, it's important to keep tomorrow's weather forecast in mind.

New South Wales

The big question for New South Wales is whether showers will clear in time for Christmas lunch.

Sarah Scully, duty forecaster at the Bureau of Meteorology says there is a chance Sydney could get lucky.

"For Sydney, cloudy with the chance of a shower during the morning, probably early morning and then again during the afternoon. A top of 23 degrees," she said.

Fingers crossed Christmas lunch will land in the dry patch in the middle, but a few puzzle books to keep granny and the kids occupied if the afternoon turns into an inside affair could be a good idea.

Meanwhile, to the west of the Blue Mountains, conditions are expected to be warm and dry.

Victoria

Victoria is expecting a generally cool, cloudy Christmas day.

"In Melbourne it's going to be relatively mild, partly cloudy and 21 degrees," according to Ms Scully.

"Perfect Christmas roast weather."

But with a bit of luck Melbourne will have cleared to its beautiful best in time for the Boxing Day Test toss at the MCG on Saturday.

City Min Max Forecast
Sydney 18C 23C Light shower or two
Melbourne 12C 20C Partly Cloudy
Brisbane 21C 27C Possible shower
Perth 21C 35C Very hot and mostly sunny
Adelaide 13C 29C Sunny
Hobart 9C 19C Cloudy
Canberra 13C 24C Partly cloudy
Darwin 24C 32C Shower or two possible storm

Queensland

Any Queenslanders still contemplating an outdoor Christmas lunch should seriously consider a last-minute grab for a few tarps.

The capital and and the south-east are not exempt.

"[Brisbane is] expecting a cloudy day with the chance of a shower, really at any stage of the day, and a maximum of 27 degrees," Ms Scully said.

South-east rainfall totals are not expected to be as high as they have been in recent weeks, but Ms Scully said there was the potential for heavy falls in the central inland and the central coast of Queensland, with the possibility of localised rainfall totals of up to 150 millimetres.

"It's important for everyone to keep an eye out for any warnings or flood watches," she said.

South Australia

It is set to be a glorious Christmas Day for South Australia, with plenty of opportunities to get outdoors.

With a maximum of 29 degrees, sunny Adelaide will see perfect beach weather.

There is likely to be some cloud around in the south-east, but a high pressure system means mostly fine conditions are expected to linger until a cool change moves through on Sunday.

Western Australia

Christmas Eve is tipped to be a scorcher, getting up to 40C in Perth.

"That's due to a north-easterly wind that's bringing a very hot air mass from inland Australia over Perth," Ms Scully said.

Popping a few icy poles into the shopping trolley could be a good move.

Thankfully, things are expected to cool down a bit tomorrow, with a south-westerly change and a maximum of 35C in Perth.

The north will continue to be typically tropical, with possible storms in the far north but generally sunny conditions along the coast.

Tasmania

Tasmanians, if you have any rellies visiting from the mainland be sure to keep a supply of the winter kit on hand.

No Queenslanders are going to think 19C is warm, no matter how many times you point out the sun is shining.

There is a chance of a shower in the state's west but generally dry, cool and mild conditions will prevail for the rest of Tasmania.

Northern Territory

It should be a standard wet season affair up north — 32C and the chance of a storm for Darwin.

But things are looking decidedly cooler further south.

Alice Springs is shaping up to have one of its coolest Christmases on record with a maximum of 26C.

Impressive rainfall over the last few days has left central Australia awash and preparing for a decidedly different Christmas to last year.

Whatever the weather, we wish readers a wonderful and safe Christmas Day.
