Tony Yeboah on his Leeds United regret as he reminisces on THAT goal against Liverpool

Think back to Tony Yeboah and the chances are you’ll have an image of the Leeds United cult hero scoring some of the Premier League’s best-ever goals.

There’s a debate about which of his long-range strikes, scored against Wimbledon and Liverpool within a few weeks of one another, is the best - but the former Ghana international has a particular favourite.

Yeboah has just given a new interview with FourFourTwo magazine in which he looks back on when he was on top of the world at Elland Road, scoring back-to-back goals of the month at the start of the 1995-96 season.

He also gave his thoughts on his former club’s near-miss with promotion last season, and the circumstances that brought an end to his time at United.

“Without doubt, that was the best goal I scored,” he said, revealing he preferred the goal against Liverpool. “The Wimbledon goal comes close but we won that game 4-2. Liverpool were the team I supported growing up, and it was the only goal of the game. It meant more.”

The striker scored 24 Premier League goals in just over two seasons at Leeds, leaving the club in the early weeks of the 1996-17 after a clash of personalities with new manager George Graham.

He went back to the Bundesliga, making the switch to Hamburg and making 100 appearances for the club before ending his career at Qatari side Al-Gharafa SC.

But he revealed he has some regrets over how the rest of his career panned out.

“Playing for Leeds was the best time of my life,” he added. “Looking back, maybe I should have stayed there for the rest of my career.”
