Tony Wyn-Jones dead: Former Radio One DJ dies after a 'long illness'

Former Radio One DJ Tony Wyn-Jones has died at the age of 77.

He was regarded as a "legend" of the DJ scene, and worked at the BBC from 1969 to 1973.

Tony died at his home in Neath, Wales following a long illness.

He was once a resident DJ at Swansea’s famous old Top Rank club before finding fame at the BBC.

One of his regular appearances was on the Junior Choice Christmas day shows which he did for four years running.

After leaving the station, Tony continued his passion for DJing until he became 'really ill', his wife Glenys told Wales Online.

"He used to go around the holiday camps Djing with Radio 1 and whenever I could get time off I would go with him. It was exciting and and he met some big names in music like Cliff Richard, The Fortunes, Badfinger.

"Bonnie Tyler would say he was her favourite DJ ever."

He is survived by wife-of-53 years Glenys and their three sons David, Andy and the late Johnathan - along with eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Later in life, Tony went on to manage different entertainment values and gave the match day announcements at the old home of Swansea City Football Club, The Vetch Field.

He went on to become a Neath Port Talbot Council member for Bryncoch South for one term between 2008 and 2012, and was also a Blaenhonddan community council member.

Leader of Neath Port Talbot Council, Rob Jones said: "My heartfelt condolences go out to the family, especially at this time with the restrictions being placed on us through Covid-19.

"Tony Wyn-Jones served one term on the Bryncoch South ward between 2008 and 2012.

"On behalf of everybody on the council I can offer our condolences at this time."
