Tony Watt swapping Motherwell for Dundee United will leave 'Well boss 'angry' as pundit 'surprised' by transfer

Tony Watt's move from Motherwell to Dundee United will leave Fir Park manager Graham Alexander far from happy, according to Derek McInnes.

The club's top scorer is believed to have signed a pre-contract with the Steelmen's Premiership rivals ahead of his Motherwell contract expiring in May.

Talks to bring the deal forward to January are now reported to be underway. Watt joined Motherwell in 2020 and has netted 10 times this season.

Former United player and Aberdeen manager McInnes reckons it's a situation that won't please Motherwell's boss, but says it's been a case of Watt reviewing what's best for him.

He said on Sky Sports: "Tony doesn't like hanging about at any one club for too long. He's been very good over the last 18 months or so.

"He's been a strong performer and won a lot of plaudits. Motherwell has been good for him but he's looking to see what other options are out there.

"It's not ideal as a manager and you do get a bit angry, especially when they are a club who are around you in the league."

Sportscene pundit Michael Stewart meanwhile is shocked over Watt's decision. The former midfielder reckons it won't be a life-changing move in terms of finances.

Stewart said: "If it does turn out he's gone to Dundee United, I will be a wee bit surprised. I think the form he is in and with the history he's got of going around a number of clubs, it looks like he's found a home.

"Will it be transformational wages going to Dundee United? I don't think so. So I am a surprised that there wasn't a deal to be done at Motherwell."
