Tony Watt early Dundee United move lined up as Tam Courts details January window strategy

Dundee United will make an early move for Tony Watt - as soon as Kerr Smith’s move to Aston Villa is sealed.

The Tannadice club have already signed the Motherwell striker on a pre-contract for next season.

They will now make an offer to try and strike a six figure deal to try and get the 28-year-old in before their Premiership restart against St Mirren on Tuesday.

United are set to net a near £2 million deal - which includes a number of add ons - for teenage defender Smith from Villa.

The 17-year-old was down in the Midlands for his medical and to finalise his deal on Wednesday, with the English Premier League side are expected to confirm his signing on Thursday.

Dundee United coach Tam Courts expects United to remain active in the transfer market with at least two arrivals.

Courts said: “Tony (Asghar), Sean (McGee) and the recruitment team are working on things at the moment. We are getting to the stage where there are a couple of recruitment meetings a day so it is a busy spell with a lot of movement in and out.

“We feel, as a coaching staff, we have definitely progressed the team and evolved from some of the players who have served us so well over the past three or four seasons. I definitely think there is an opportunity to freshen up. That will come down to the club giving me that support, which they have done to try and secure the targets we have identified.

“What we have shown with our approach to recruitment is that we are very targeted and structured and we are very patient to get the right people.

"If the targets we have identified are secured then it will be quite exciting to see a couple of good additions come in during the January window."

They are also likely to let Mark Connolly join Dundalk on loan for the second half of the season, while captain Mark Reynolds could also leave to get first-team football going into the last five months of the window.
