Tony Watt can get back in Scotland squad, says Motherwell boss Graham Alexander

Motherwell boss Graham Alexander says striker Tony Watt can get back into the Scotland squad, if he continues to work hard for the Steelmen.

Ahead of today's Premiership clash at home to Aberdeen, Alexander says he hasn't spoken to the 27-year-old about the matter, but says every player who is able to should be desperate to pull on their national team's shirt.

Watt has started the season in a rich vein of form, is top scorer at the club with four goals, and Alexander reckons the former Celtic and St Johntone star can do well for club and country.

When asked if Watt can get back involved with Steve Clarke's side, Alexander said: "I don't see why not. The Scotland squad and every international squad is the pinnacle of that country's pool of players and so you have to be good over a consistent length of time, I believe, to get that recognition.

"We all know what Tony's capable of, and I think he knows that as well, but there is a big group of players, I believe, just outside the Scotland squad that are all fighting to get in it.

Alexander says there are players operating just outside the Scotland, and believes Watt is one of them (SNS Group)

"I think Tony is one of that pool, but you have to be consistently good over a significant amount of time, and keep scoring - that will certainly help his case."

Alexander added: "We're delighted with how he has played and contributed to the team, certainly since coming back into the team.

"Any player that's available and can play for his country should have those ambitions, if he's playing at the top level, which Tony is in Scotland.

"I would like him to have that ambition, to have that drive, and I haven't spoken to him about it, but I'm sure, being a proud Scotsman, he would love to be back in the squad.

"I'm more concentrating on what he does for us as a club., because it's stepping stones - if you're not playing well for your club, forget about it, so he's got to continue to play well for us."
