Tony Watt and the 'honest chat' that has him firing and ready to strike against Rangers

Graham Alexander sees no reason Motherwell can't upset the apple cart against Rangers on Sunday.

But he knows his team will need to be at their best - even if Steven Gerrard 's defending champions aren't quite firing themselves.

Motherwell have drawn their last two games against the Ibrox side and took points from them in Glasgow earlier this season.

Rangers will travel to Fir Park this weekend to kick off the second round of Premiership fixtures and might fancy their chances against a side who have taken one point from their last four games.

But Alexander is yet to taste defeat against Gers since taking the Motherwell post and he's quietly confident that record gives them a chance against the champions on Saturday.

He told Sky Sports: "It gives us belief. I wouldn't say anything extra but we know we're a good team.

"We know we can compete against all the teams in the league but we have to do a lot of things well and work extremely hard.

"The players know when we bring our game and do things right then we do ourselves the best chance of winning or at least getting a point.

"They're a top team. Obviously they're the defending champions and they've started the season really well again.

"We've already played them at Ibrox which was a tough game. We expect nothing different on Sunday.

"These are the games we cherish and look forward to so we'll give it a good shot."

If Motherwell are to take anything, they'll be depending on talisman Tony Watt to come up with the goods in front of goal.

The ex-Celtic striker is in the form of his life, and after a brace against St Mirren last time out put him on eight for the season, he just needs two more goals to hit double figures for the first time ever.

The 27-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and his firing form has led to speculation it could be difficult for Motherwell to keep him.

But Alexander is only focused on the positives - even if he's had to have an "honest" conversation or two with Watt to get his best form out of him.

When asked if it will be hard for Motherwell to hold onto him, Alexander continued: "We're not focusing on that, we're focusing on him producing performances and getting goals.

"I left him out early on in the season and we had a really good, honest chat.

"I told him how much I value him but the importance of having an end product is vital for us to win games.

"He came back in really quickly and he's done exceptionally well.

"We haven't improved him as a player. I'd say we've focused his mind on what's needed as a centre-forward.

"It's down to Tony scoring the goals and leading the line. Really pleased with him, he's done exceptionally well over the last nine or 10 games and hopefully he continues those performances for the rest of the season."
