Tony Romo is headed back to Punta Cana on another sponsor exemption.
The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback received his third sponsor exemption, the PGA Tour announced Wednesday, and is expected to make his second Tour start on March 28 at the 2019 Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship in the Dominican Republic.
The 38-year-old lead analyst for the NFL on CBS also received a sponsor exemption in 2018 when he played in the first edition of the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship— previously the Web.com Tour event until it landed on the PGA Tour schedule in 2018. The amateur finished his first PGA Tour start in last place, 15-over for the tournament, after shooting 10-over 82 in the second round and missing the cut.
In February, Romo received another sponsor exemption and is expected to play in PGA Tour’s AT&T Byron Nelson in May.
Romo, who will compete as an individual in Punta Cana, also played in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am alongside pro partner Jim Furyk in February. He impressed by making a birdie after hitting off a rooftop bar, but withdrew from the tournament before the third round to attend the funeral of former Cowboys quarterbacks coach Wade Wilson.
While Romo may be playing in a Tour event in Punta Cana, many of the top-ranked golfers will be participating in the WGC-Match Play at Austin Country Club in Austin, Texas the same weekend.
But that doesn’t take away from his characteristic enthusiasm.
“Golf has been a passion of mine throughout my life, giving me another athletic outlet to hone my skills and compete,” Romo said in a statement Wednesday. “The opportunity to compete at the highest levels of golf, the PGA Tour event, was a dream come true for me. I’m thankful to the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship for inviting me to join them once again this year, and I’m excited at the chance to compete against the best of the best.”
The event features a $3,000,000 purse, 300 FedExCup points and will be broadcast on the Golf Channel from March 28-31.
