Tony Mowbray will face familiar face at Southampton in battle of Championship wits

Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray will face a familiar face in a battle of wits in the Championship next season. Brother, Darren Mowbray, has taken up the role of head of recruitment at recently relegated side Southampton.

The 47-year-old will perform the same role from former club Aberdeen, where he's helped unearth some of their standout talents in the 2022/23 campaign, including strikers Bojan Miovski and Luis Duk Lopes. A Saints statement read: "Mowbray arrives from Aberdeen, having joined the Scottish Premier League side – who finished third in this season’s table – as Head of Recruitment in 2021. Prior to that, he held senior roles at Burnley, Middlesbrough and Leeds.

"Bitcon and Mowbray will join the club later this summer, with Mowbray serving his notice at Aberdeen until 1st July. They will both work as part of the team under incoming Director of Football Jason Wilcox."

Southampton look to be in the weakest position of the three relegated sides having finished bottom of the Premier League and they've already admitted a cost-cutting approach will be needed heading into next season. The Saints will need a huge rebuild, but that won't be unfamiliar ground for the younger Mowbray brother, who worked with Jim Goodwin to mastermind a major rebuild at the Granite City.

He's set to serve his notice with Aberdeen before leaving the club on July 1 where he'll begin preparing for life in the Championship.
