Tony Lippett looking to mentor younger Giants players, compete for playing time

When you look at the cornerback depth of the New York Giants, the significant experience outside of Janoris Jenkins is nearly nonexistent.

After all, the Giants did just draft three defensive backs in the 2019 NFL Draft in Deandre Baker, Julian Love and Corey Ballentine.

But lost in the shuffle of the depth chart is Tony Lippett, who’s back for his second season with the team and trying to make the roster again after appearing in just three games last season — he missed the entire 2017 season and a majority of the 2018 season due to recovering from a torn Achilles injury.

Before the Giants, Lippett started 13 of 16 games for the Miami Dolphins in the 2016 season. The 26-year-old is taking that experience he has and trying to help the younger players he’s been working with everyday.

“My role is show my length, make plays and compete every day,” Lippett told NJ Advance Media. “We’ve got some young guys, so I’m going to monitor myself and help my teammates as much as I can. I always pull them aside and teach them different stuff I’ve seen from playing.”

Lippett will have his work cut out for him, as not only is he competing with the rookie class for playing time, but will also be competing with Sam Beal, who was injured before his rookie season last year and will be looking to make an impact as well.
