CHICAGO — Tony La Russa earned career victory No. 2,764, the second-most for a manager in major-league history, as the Chicago White Sox beat the Detroit Tigers 3-0 on Sunday at Guaranteed Rate Field.
La Russa entered the day tied for second with John McGraw. He now trails only Connie Mack, who had 3,731 career victories.
Starter Dylan Cease allowed five hits with 10 strikeouts and one walk in seven innings, while Tim Anderson had two RBIs for the Sox, who won three of four in the series.
The Sox scored three runs in the second.
Adam Eaton tripled and scored on a single by Andrew Vaughn. A double by Nick Madrigal put runners on second and third with two out. Anderson knocked them both in with a single.
Anderson and Madrigal each had two hits.
Cease bounced back from his last start, in which he allowed six runs in 3⅓ innings Tuesday in Cleveland. He struck out at least two in three innings Sunday. He also received strong defense, including center fielder Adam Engel jumping to rob Niko Goodrum of a home run in the fifth.
Closer Liam Hendriks struck out two in a perfect ninth for his 15th save as the Sox increased their lead in the American League Central to four games over the second-place Indians.
