Tony Gonzales (R) wins election to succeed Will Hurd (R) in Texas’ 23rd Congressional District

Tony Gonzales (R) defeated Gina Ortiz Jones (D) and Beto Villela (L) in Texas’ 23rd Congressional District. The seat was left open following Will Hurd’s (R) retirement.

The district was one of five held by Republicans that Hillary Clinton (D) had carried in the 2016 presidential election. That year, she defeated Donald Trump (R) 50% to 46% in the district.

This was Gina Ortiz Jones’ second time running as the Democratic nominee in this district; in 2018, she lost to Hurd 49.2% to 48.7%. Preliminary results suggest Gonzales expanded on Hurd’s 2018 margin, defeating Ortiz Jones 50.7% to 46.5%.

Both parties’ national committees targeted this district, with the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) naming Ortiz Jones to its Red to Blue program and the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) naming Gonzales to its Young Guns program.
