Tony Fernandes has suggested that Queens Park Rangers will not be active on the final day of the transfer window, maintaining that the club’s business last summer has made for a squad which should be strong enough to stay up.
QPR have suffered huge financial losses in recent seasons and, as such, they are tied by the financial fair play restrictions. They have been linked with a number of moves, particularly after selling the midfielder Jordon Mutch to Crystal Palace for £4.5m, and Harry Redknapp, the manager, is keen to strengthen.
But Fernandes, who oversaw the signing of several players last summer, including Steven Caulker, Rio Ferdinand, Leroy Fer and Sandro, moved to temper expectations.
“No more cheque book,” the chairman tweeted on Monday morning. “We have good players. Bought all the players manager asked for in summer. Our players not mercenaries. Good guys. If something interesting comes up, we would look at it. But I’m not optimistic. Given the right motivation, tactics and coaching we can achieve much more.”
