Tony Dunne dead: Tributes paid as Man Utd and Ireland football legend passes away aged 78

Tributes have been paid following the death of Irish Manchester United legend Tony Dunne at the age of 78.

The Dubliner is remembered as one of the all-time Old Trafford greats - winning two league titles, an FA Cup and the 1968 European Cup with the Red Devils under Matt Busby.

After joining Man Utd from Shelbourne for £5,000 in 1960, he played 535 times for the club throughout the 1960s and into the early 1970s.

He sits eighth in the all-time Man Utd appearances list behind fellow Old Trafford legends Ryan Giggs, Bobby Charlton, Bill Foulkes, Paul Scholes, Gary Neville, Wayne Rooney and Alex Stepney.

Dunne won 33 caps for the Ireland - captaining the Boys in Green on four occasions in a 13-year international career.

Man Utd led the tributes, saying: One of our greatest-ever full-backs. An integral part of the 1968 European Cup-winning side.

"A player who made 535 appearances in the red shirt of Manchester United. Our heartfelt condolences go to the loved ones of Tony Dunne. May he rest in peace."

Dunne's former club Shels paid tribute on social media, tweeting: "Shelbourne FC is saddened to send our condolences to the family and friends of former FAI Cup winning Shels player Tony Dunne after his passing.

"Tony had a glittering career winning a European Cup with @ManUtd and 33 caps for @FAIreland. RIP Tony."

He left Old Trafford for Bolton Wanderers in 1973 and helped the club win the second division title in 1978.

Dunne went on to play for Detroit Express in the North American Soccer League and was assistant manager at Bolton, as well as manager of Norway's Steinkjer FK in 1982.

Dunne's ex-Man Utd team-mate Alex Stepney said: "Very sad to hear that my good friend and Utd fullback Tony Dunne has passed away. My love to all the family. Tony was a class act. RIP."
