Tony Cascarino's telling observation over Newcastle's improvement against Brighton

Newcastle United reaped the rewards of throwing more bodies into the box against Tottenham and must keep up that brave approach if they are to avoid relegation from the Premier League.

That is the verdict of Tony Cascarino who feels the Magpies were much improved from the defeat to Brighton a fortnight ago as a result.

Goals from Joelinton and Joe Willock cancelled out a brace from Harry Kane as Newcastle earned a crucial 2-2 draw with Tottenham.

It stretched the gap between United and the relegation zone to three points and Cascarino feels that performance should now serve as a template for Steve Bruce's side for their final eight games of the season.

"There seem to be statistics for just about everything in a football match these days but one there isn’t, and I think it would be a telling one, is the number of players in the opposing penalty area," Cascarino told The Times.

"Put simply, the more you put in there the more likely you are to score.

"So if you have one or two players up front and it is only them getting into the box, then that is easy for defenders to pick up. If you start adding more players, coming in from midfield, it becomes more difficult and you will create chances.

"We saw that with Newcastle United against Tottenham Hotspur. When Newcastle played against Brighton & Hove Albion they played with no recognised centre forward and lost 3-0.

"Today there were four bodies in the box for Joelinton’s goal and that created the opening for him to score. It was the same with their equaliser. There were three in the box with Joe Willock running from deep to score.

"By and large Newcastle don't get many goals from midfield so if they are going to stay up they have to be braver, as they were against Spurs, and get players in the box."
