Tony Blair's glib dismissal

An editorial in today's New York Times rebukes Tony Blair's decision to halt investigations into BAE's secret payments over arms sales to Saudi Arabia.

Wondering if the prime minister "seems determined to use his final weeks in office to show how far he has strayed from the pledges of clean government that helped sweep him to power a decade ago," the NYT's leader writers conclude:

Mr Blair ought to understand, even if the princes don't, that avoiding embarrassment to powerful friends and allies is not a legitimate reason to quash a corruption investigation.
